Whether or not they've been pregnant, most women run screaming from the room at the sight of maternity clothes. But maternity wear has changed from the muu-muus of the 1800s. Today's prego styles are close-fitting and shapely. Whether or not she has a belly, maternity clothes are made to accentuate a woman's assets and downplay her flaws. So don't pass by the maternity section--you might find some styles there that are the perfect length, a flattering cut, and a great price! More examples here: Maternity clothes: not just for the pregnant (Warning: If you've been prego, you should probably buy new maternity clothes, not wear the ones you wore during your pregnancy which may be stretched out and may be sized bigger than you need.) | Take this maternity sweater dress from H&M--nothing tent-like about it--in fact, I don't know where the baby would go in this dress if I were pregnant! The length was right, and price was good (about $30), but I didn't buy it because the small (shown) was too tight and one of the shoulders on the medium was pulled out of shape by the hangar. But the dress does actually make me look curvier and thinner than usual. |

Especially after the drab browns of fall, I'm so excited about this new color combination--so light and bright for winter. I was inspired by cranberry sauce and a blue vase on Thanksgiving.
Cranberry, raspberry, wine, light blue, torquoise...now I'm pulling out everything I have to create more outfits with this color combination. Much of my jewelry and accessories has come as hoilday gifts from dear friends and family members:

One could easily develop a burning obsession for H&M lingerie. One might wake in the night having dreamt of its nostalgic appeal.
Luckily, the bras are as well made as they are beautiful. They boast internal seaming and boning, removable pads, and 3-hook clasps on even some of the small sizes. The strapless bras have a rubbery strip along the inside edges to help them stay put. Even more obsession-worthy, almost all the bras are $14.95--even the strapless ones! Many are sale priced at $7 (and they aren't even turquoise!). H&M's ornate styles remind me of the fine Italian Intimissimi line, which I have loved to death. H&M's lingerie recalls the glamour of the '40s while providing high-tech support. Old Navy and H&M have the lowest prices. Have you found them anywhere else for less?
Burgundy, chianti, merlot, montepulciano d'abruzzo. Ox blood, plum, maroon, deep red. This is the color jeans or cords I want for fall and winter. Subtly flattering to your skin tone like the flush of rosé. Not so showy as fire engine red or taxi yellow. Easy to match--picture with cream, sand, animal print, black/white, silver, stripes, denim, and midnight blue. Good for work or play. H&M vs. Forever21: We love both H&M and Forever 21 for offering affordable, stylish fashions to us budgetistas! H&Ms are coming to malls across the country, moving in surprisingly right next to Forever 21s. So which one offers the best deals and best finds?
It’s time to pull out your summer blouses--sleeveless or otherwise--and top them with an earth-toned cardigan.
How often do you wear all black?
I learned its power in high school. By college, I was more likely to wear all white with a smidgen of black (perhaps the shoe)--a touch of malice :-) . Today I wear all black about twice a month. Never fails to make me feel strong and professional. Still can't purchase H&M online, but at least now you can look more closely online at each item they sell. Dress above comes in four colors, and I think it might also work as a tunic. Will check it out this weekend and let you know. Do you remember the magazine covers with celebrities in varying shades of denim? About 5 years ago I donated all my denim shirts and kept but one dark jean jacket. But at H&M last week, I found a great denim dress for $34.95. My friend that I was shopping with said her mom had worn a similar dress in the '70s. The fit is different today than 5 (or 40) years ago--not so boxy, close-cut sleeves. Denim feels good and flatters everyone; I say welcome back to my closet.
