So here is Kryptonian supervillian Ursa followed by my kneel-before-Zod's-girlfriend's top, a recent purchase that's undergone a couple surgeries. It was actually a dress that I adapted into a top, & then I also added a tiny stitch to each sleeve, so they wouldn't hang open quite as much, which will allow me to wear it to work.
Don't you love the old Superman movies with Christopher Reeve? Who can forget Planet Euston in Superman II ? Re-watching this old movie recently, I was struck by General Zod's girlfriend Ursa's outfit--even in 1980, split-sleeves were in style! Do you like the idea of wearing your crossbody bag up high? Do you think it might be better for our backs?
I like the look & have been giving it a try :-) I love my new stretchy, side-slit Zara skirt. But does it really go with everything??... Which would you choose...? This... Or this...
Which one would you choose?
Loath to give up the lace-up trend, the fashion industry has moved the lacing from tops & sweaters to skirts & pants...
Paperbag waist jeans & pants The paperbag waist has made a comeback... Bucket bags
Dear Fashion Feline: I could use your help transitioning to jeans from dresses for a curvy body. --Kara Dear Kara, Many thanks for your question. Here are a few tips: 1. Curves are in (think Kardashians), & they're sexy. So don't shy away from showing them off. A lot of how our clothes look is based on how we feel in them--feel good about your curves. 2. Try kick-crops. My favorite style of jean is kick crop. Skinny is often too tight on the thighs & restrictive. Bootcut can be great with heels. Wide leg sometimes feels too big & sloppy. But kick-crop lets you show off your ankles while balancing out your upper half with its small flare at the cuff. See what you think. You should know that all styles are still in fashion, though--it's like the new styles of jean just absorbed the old ones, added to them--so your favorite jeans are not outdated. Take a look at J. Crew's Denim Shop to see what I mean. 3. Wear them tight, not loose (but feel comfortable). Too loose can look frumpy & bag or sag. 4. To tuck or not to tuck? I've tried tucking, but it sure takes guts & it's hard to get the look right. I'd try a few combinations to see what looks best for you: -try a long top with skinny or kick-crop jeans -try an off-shoulder or cold-shoulder top with kick-crops -try a top or jacket that cinches at the waist with a bootcut jean 5. Patience is your friend. I bought a tulle skirt the other day (I know that's weird), & I tried on no fewer than 8 tops (a striped off-shoulder tee, 2 regular striped tees, 3 black sweaters, a black cold-shoulder top, & a gray sweater) with it before I found one (a red crewneck) that hit at the right spot on my hips. You may have to try on a lot of combinations before you find the right dimensions. Then hang the combos together in your closet so you don't have to remember what works & don't have to go through that process again. 6. Look for stretch. I remember back when jeans didn't have that little 5% elastane in them--ugh! You could hardly stand to wear them for an hour let alone for a car ride to the mountains (or the beach in your case :-). My most comfortable jeans that keep their shape best have a good amount of stretch in them. 7. Play up your features. Balance the attention on your lower half with a bit of flare on your upper half. Try an off-shoulder or cold-shoulder top. Try tops in strong colors, with beautiful patterns, or with details like ties. Wear a beautiful necklace, bold earrings, or a striking lip color. All tops below from Zara. 8. A note on washes. A dark wash typically keeps its shape better than a light wash since the material is thicker & firmer. I think a dark wash looks a little more polished too. But I'd also give a try to destroyed jeans--a little skin showing through at the knees or thighs is a little like showing off your ankles. I hope these tips are helpful! I'll bet my readers have some great suggestions too--please help, dear readers. Many thanks & cheers! --FF >^.^<
Did you wear boots like these as a kid? I wore ones like this at camp each summer. I was surprised to see them at Madewell a couple weeks ago, then surprised again seeing a similar version at Target. Madewell's are a little more classic, but I think both are cute.
I read recently that we are more like to buy anything we've seen before. Nostalgia feels good. Of course, so does wearing a lug sole that will keep you from slipping on ice this winter :-)) |
