Amy's star sapphire ring

Picture

All throughout my childhood I would stare adoringly at my mother's star sapphire ring. I was so intrigued by how it made a six-way-star effect when the light hit it. Secretly I said to myself when my mother goes onto to heaven someday, I hope she wills me that ring...

Years passed from childhood into adulthood, and at a not so young but not so old age of 26, I was divorced. The year was 2003, and it had been the most painful year to date. I found out the man I loved for 8 years had had an affair, and we were divorced in a matter of six months. If that wasn't enough for 2003, my best friend almost died, I sold my house, moved, changed jobs, and started full-time graduate school classes.

As I went through my separation and divorce, I purposely gave my wedding ring back to my ex, and as a result my left ring finger never felt so naked.

"We want you to know that our love for you as parents will never change,
we will never leave you, and this ring is a symbol of that."

One evening as I was spending time with my parents, my mother sat down next to me, handed me a box, and in it was my mother's beloved star sapphire ring. She said I want you to have it; we know you gave your wedding ring back and how hard this year has been for you. We also want you to know that our love for you as parents will never change, we will never leave you, and this ring is a symbol of that.

A decade later this ring is still more valuable to me than most items I own. It is a symbol not just of my parents' love for me as their child but also that life goes on, that I overcame, and that in the end LOVE does conquer all.
