What are the latest fashion rules and must we heed them?
Question:
Dear Fashion Feline,
I know there used to be a lot of snooty fashion rules, like "don't wear blue with green" (author Shirley Jackson got mocked for doing this in Rochester, NY in the 1930s) or "no white shoes before Memorial Day or after Labor Day" (my grandmother, and others, were stating this as fact as late as the 1990s). Are there still rules like that? Should we pay attention to them? --Jessy Randall http://personalwebs.coloradocollege.edu/~jrandall/

Answer:
Dear Jessy,
I have been thinking about your question--thank you for asking! I think fashion has become much like poetry--it doesn't have to rhyme, you can wear stripes (horizontal or otherwise!) with patterns, white any old time, purple with orange, tall boots with a belt (like my friend Puss in Boots). But, I have rules tied to the season--I don't ever want to look like my clothes are too heavy for the weather--hiss! It makes others feel dreary when you're dressed in dull brown wool in the middle of summer, and you're sure to hear the dreaded question: "Aren't you hot?" We have a few more rules along these lines posted at http://www.openmindfashion.com/top-10-fashion-rules.html Let us know what you think. -- >^..^< Fashion Feline
