Top 10 Fashion Rules

10.   Avoid skirts with buttons down the front. Almost always frumpy.

9.    Buy the outfit then find the event. You'll never find the right dress the day of the dance.

8.   Dress a little younger than your age. That doesn’t mean donning a skin-tight micro-mini with sky-high heels, but don’t assume you must wear floral blazers with stiff shoulder pads because you’re grown up. Don’t be afraid to wear a trendy, youthful style that flatters you.

7.   Size matters. Don't wear things that are too too tight, but, worse yet, don't wear clothes--especially shirts--that are too big. Wear your clothes; don't swim in them.

6.   As you get older, go more feminine. As we age, men and women become more androgynous. Offset this change with more feminine colors, textures, and styles.

5.    Stacked, spiked, wedge, platform, kitten—all we are saying: give heels a chance.

4.   Wear an outfit, not a costume. Ideally people won’t look at you and say, “There goes a sailor, a soldier, a Catholic schoolgirl, a waiter, a cowgirl, a camp counselor, a nurse.”

3.   Never wear something that will elicit the comment “Aren’t you cold?” or “Aren’t you hot?” Worst case scenario: a huge sweater you can’t take off (no appropriate layer underneath) on a hot day.

2.    Color can make or outdate you. Study the latest shades. Try combining colors in new ways. Wear colors that flatter you.

1.    Be open-minded and try everything on. You’d be surprised what you might find in the teens’, maternity, and boys’ departments and from stores or catalogs you never thought you’d shop from.
