How do I match my tops and bottoms?
Garnet Hill outfit (no longer available)
Question:
Fashion Feline, will you please give us a lesson on assembling outfits and combining different fabrics (what are the no-nos? I'm always a little confused and just go by whether I think it looks okay)?--Christina
Answer:
This is a challenging question--thank you for asking, Christina!
Mostly I think it's a study in contrasts. High and low are best paired together. For instance, wear a casual blouse or knit top with dressy pants instead of a button-down.
If the pants are conservative, shoot for more risky or playful top--purr, meow!
If the top has a high neckline or turtleneck, wear a short skirt.
Textures can be trickier, but the same rule applies: a very soft or silky fabric often looks best with a rough (like cordoroy) fabric--brrrrng! I think that's why jeans so often work with so many blouses.
Dark or colored jeans allow you more flexibility with tops because they are more dressy, so your top can be more casual or low cut.
