A sudden sweep of pleated, floral, polyester, silk midi skirts are everywhere this fall. But they seem to me fraught with challenges: do you have to be tall to wear them? what shoes do you wear with them? and, then there's the problem of finding the right material blouse to wear with them... Do you own one? Do you want to?
The Zara sale is overwhelming. There are literally over 3,000 items on sale. A Zara store is also opening in Denver soon--I can't decide if that's good or bad :-)
Here are just a few odd things I'll be trying not to buy, & when I say odd, I do mean odd. So many of their clothes are unusual or retro, but somehow they seem glamorous to me.
Remember that the items go down in price by about $5 each week, so patience is your friend if you want something.
A walk through Uniqlo nearly killed me, so many pretty & fine clothes at such great prices. Here's just a minor selection followed by a snap of the $5.90 wrap top (who can resist that price??) on me.
I believe it's "gay-la" as in gaiety, and "Have a gay time!" rather than "goll-a" as in "How does she have the gall to wear such a thing?!" But youtube says I'm wrong.
Anyway, I was happy to get to wear my gala dress at last this past week for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 100-year anniversary gala! I had to wear a scarf over it since the hall was so cold, but the slightly retro-style dress felt appropriate for a 1920s celebration. Very fun to see such wonderful students--especially those about to graduate--honored and celebrated!
I am drawn to Hana Tajima's elegant designs that appeal to women from around the world & have been following her releases at Uniqlo. Here is a new tunic I just purchased, which is long enough to wear as a dress.
The tunic is definitely a bit oversized: I'm wearing a small here but could use an XS if that size weren't sold out--I've had to fold up the sleeves one fold.
The tunic is made of linen, which keeps you cool but does wrinkle. The wrinkles are not so noticeable on the dark blue fabric. I tried the off-white tunic too, by the way, but it didn't look right.
The tie can tie at the front or the back--tied at the front, it creates some unusual folds of material on each side, but I think the look is on trend.
The style is modest wear, which I like for work. I think the tunic dress is a good buy for $39.90.

It was this photo from J. Crew that led me to search for dark dark jeans to wear with my blue turtleneck.
So I ran over to Urban Outfitters online where I've bought jeans I love before & searched the sale. These jeans are $29 (now minus 30%), & I know they're a little different, but I love kick crops since you can wear them happily year round.
These jeans have no pockets & no belt loops, so you have to get just the right size. The dark wash makes them a bit bigger than normal jeans since they've never been shrunk.
My husband says the buttons make them look like a train conductor's pants. He also started singing "On the Good Ship Lollipop" :-) I don't know that he's a fan. But I'm happy with them--super comfy & so blue....
Two more pairs of so blue jeans from Urban Outfitters...
I believe they call them the foundation layers, & at one time I didn't think they mattered. Now I know better.
Here are three changes I've made this year to my base layers that have significantly changed my life.
I've discovered the luxurious benefits of wearing a slip. As I'm getting ready, I feel like a glamorous movie star. And this smooth layer under my dresses & skirts helps them fall better & not catch when I walk.
I purchased the slips below for about $6 each (90% off) at the Calypso St. Barth store in Cherry Creek North when they were going out of business. Online they're still $60, but supposedly the entire company is going out of biz, so they should sell them soon at a discount. I'll keep you posted.
2. Front-closure bras
I struggled for years with the straps on my bras falling off my shoulders. No more! This year I changed to front-closure bras--straps stay put, no adjusting through the day. Some are racerback or crisscross my back, but I also have some with normal straps, so I can wear them with boatneck or wide-neck tops.
3. H&M hose
I'm pretty hard on hose because I'm always in a rush. For years, I've worn the old basic: Leggs' hose. But lately, they rip when I pull them up. So I bought this pack of H&M hose--4 pairs for $5.99! They're stretchy & don't rip nor run!
Great deal if you wear hose.
This concludes this episode of For girls only: undergarments. Wishing everyone a comfortable, luxurious week!
Which dress I should wear to the wedding I'm going to tonight?
My husband will be wearing a dark blue suit & a yellow & blue striped tie.
It's a 4:30 wedding with dinner & dancing to follow. The weather is in the 60s.
Thank you so much for your help!
