Our daily lace

Lately we see lace attached to everyday items. Do-it-yourselfers: it seems we should be able to recreate this look easily enough.

Anthropologie Rione Skirt, $118

I looked all over Etsy to see if someone might have handmade a similar look to this. No luck.

The idea of adding lace to an existing item seems to me in keeping with TED's TEN guidelines for sustainable design. It fits with Design Strategy#2: Design for Recycling/Upcycling.

Unpopular pieces get marked down faster. I'm hoping no one wants these items, so I might be able to get them at a price I can afford before winter!

The fashion industry sometimes challenges us to question what we've come to believe. Take high-low sweaters, skirts, and dresses. We'd never have thought it was ok to have our sweaters stretched out at the sides into a bell shape. We'd have worried if the back hem on our skirt or dress were drooping or falling.
But a little dropped hem might be all right—how many of us want to show off the backs of our thighs anyway?

Crochet has been popular for some time, but lately it's really come into its own as we see crochet skirts, dresses, shorts, and embellishments. The allure is not surprising given the trend for clothes to reveal an understated sexuality, to give subtle glimpses of skin.
