Last Sunday I asked whether you could wear stripes with patterns, lace, florals, & more. A few people came back saying some of the combinations like stripes with patterns were a no-no.

So last night I pulled out my favorite striped top (it's from the GAP) & threw on a bunch of skirts--seems to me stripes do indeed go with everything.

What do you think?

The photographer (my 8-year-old son) insisted I try the striped top with the striped skirt since they are so similar.
I actually kind of like the result. Would you wear these together? Maybe if I added a jacket or something...

I think my combos aren't as unexpected as those in the original post, but I do think we can put our striped tops to more uses than we originally thought :-)

I'm flattered when a friend says "This looks like you" when we're shopping because it implies that I have a signature style. Whether or not you realize what your signature style is, you probably know your signature colors.

It's easy to tell kids' favorite colors because they wear, like, only purple or (in the case of my son) only orange or green (ugh!).

I've only just come to realize that my signature colors are red, white, & gray. In fact, I'm having a hard time getting dressed this morning because all my red, white, & gray things are on the bed:

I don't why I love these colors (my husband thinks I secretly wish I were a sailor in a foreign navy), but I remember when I first wore those colors together years ago, I felt 100% like me in them.

Now I often buy two of the same thing, so I have one for play & one for work.

This Garnet Hill top is pretty similar to that
<<UO top, but you only get one for $28. I had to work pretty hard not to buy this one.

Land's End Girls' Stripe V-neck Cardigan, $34

I bought this cardigan because of its red & gray-striped sleeves.
I can't decide if I like the other colors in it, but it's fun, looks ok with jeans.
I got it at a discount this summer in Girls' XXL.

J. Crew Factory Gingham Popover, $24.99 (minus 30% with code SHIRT30)

I bought this shirt to go under black sweaters as in the outfit below.

The benefit of having signature colors is that after a while most everything in your wardrobe goes together fairly easily.

Of course, new colors are always coming into vogue, people change, and I like lots of other colors & combinations.

I'm not always dressed in red, white, and gray, but most days I'm likely wearing one of those colors. They just feel right for me.

Take me away: to the French Riviera

The truth is I've never been to the French Riviera. But I've always loved French nautical clothing, especially the breton stripes in the French Navy uniform.

My summer swimsuit...
My suit for this summer comes from two unlikely sources: my top was on sale last summer at Long Tall Sally,
a British clothing company for tall women (I'm not tall), and my skort is from Lands' End girls' department.

Girls' swimwear is less than half the cost of women's. Lands' End Girls' Plus sizes will fit women up to about a size 10.
Ask me for help with the sizing if you're thinking of ordering a girl's suit for you.

I could sure use some color! :-)

What makes you so smart?

Plenty to love about Smartwool--its breathability, its warmth, its adorable styles--but, dang it, it never seems to go on sale.
Last winter, I tried on this top at REI. I pictured myself wearing it with snow pants or as a cute layer under short-sleeved tops and dresses. But it was $100, and I couldn't justify the purchase.
Now usually when I look up an item from last season, I find it at a super low sale price. Not so with Smartwool. This top is sold out at REI and Athleta and a score of other stores. I finally found it at WinterWomen.com, and it's still $76.46 and only available in S and XS. I'm excited to discover WinterWomen.com, a Colorado company.
Do you own any Smartwool? Is it worth the high price?
