My Three Tunics

Summer days at their best are lazy days of sleep, swim, sun, repeat. One day blurs into the next. Each morning you grab for the same pair of shorts, the same top. At night you might dress things up with jeans or a dress if you're going out.

My pile on the floor this summer consists of some swimwear & tunics. I posted a bunch of tunics I love here. I wear them sometimes as a swimsuit cover-up & sometimes for a casual workday.

Here are my three favorites that I'm wearing daily...

I've owned this tunic for years, but I pulled it out again when temperatures heated up. I found it a couple summers ago for next to nothing in the swim section at the GAP. Similar here & here.

I just got this tunic from J. Crew Factory for about $20. I daresay it looks better on the stand than it does on me. I may have to return it, but it's so soft & comfy, I haven't decided yet. Figure I could wear this one for work.

This tunic is also a crinkle tunic from J. Crew. I found it on ebay for about $30, & I'm wearing it pretty much daily no matter what I have planned that day. My husband said the color looks good on me, which goes a long way toward helping me love it :-) Today & most days I'm wearing it with these white shorts.

Tunics: what to wear in the heat

There's a reason why people in the hottest climates around the world--particularly those in India & Africa--wear tunics: they're easy & cool.

Here in the States, tunics have come in & out of favor. A sweeping craze for them about eight summers ago faded; they're just beginning to come back, & I've pulled out all my old ones. You'll find new ones now sometimes listed as "swim cover-ups," & they're often surprisingly affordable.

You might also try visiting an Indian store to find one; many tunics are made in India anyway. A tunic may also be called a kurta or kaftan. Most traditional Indian tunics are longer, more colorful, & more intricately embroidered than the American styles.

Tunics can have a boho feel to them or look more conservative--I like both styles. Wear them fitted, not tent-like :-). I think they're cutest with mid-thigh shorts. I believe tunics are perfectly work-appropriate with white pants or crops. I'm partial to tunics made of cotton with long or 3/4-length sleeves.

In the cart. Out of the cart. I've been nearly buying the top two tunics below since the Boden sale began.
Tunics are great! So much more interesting, I think, than just a top.
Wear them alone with tights. Wear them with cords, jeans, skinnies or wide-legs; boots, oxfords, flats, or heels.
Boden carries some of the cutest tunics around. I'm hoping these ones will get marked down just a drop more.

Dear Fashion Feline,
Do you ever have dreams, I mean regular sleeping-dreams (not daydreams), about clothes, and then you wake up and you realize there were some good ideas there? I dreamed that I found this fantastic chocolate-brown sweater dress, tunic-length, with a skinny same-color belt. The collar on the dress was really cool and so were the pockets. I wish this dress existed! It could be worn with tights or over pants, I think.

I am slightly obsessed with this tunic. I already own a couple variations on it that I've been trying to convince myself will do. But this one looks perfect and multiseasonal. I love seeing it layered over a stripey tee, love its short sleeves and raw edges. On sale 35% off with free shipping and free returns until April 11.

Loved the interview with Vera Wang in USA Weekend on how to layer your clothes http://www.usaweekend.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012302030006 . My favorite line: “Layering adds a certain nonchalance. Each element looks better, richer and more interesting when it’s put with something else, so clothes don’t look so serious.” An example? Throw a t-shirt on under a tunic, and suddenly the tunic looks natural and less dramatic. Spring is a great time to layer short sleeves over long.

Do you remember the magazine covers with celebrities in varying shades of denim? About 5 years ago I donated all my denim shirts and kept but one dark jean jacket. But at H&M last week, I found a great denim dress for $34.95. My friend that I was shopping with said her mom had worn a similar dress in the '70s. The fit is different today than 5 (or 40) years ago--not so boxy, close-cut sleeves. Denim feels good and flatters everyone; I say welcome back to my closet.
