Spring is approaching, and this is the time to try a light pullover over a dress. We’re not talking cardigan. We’re talking a crewneck, wrap, or v-neck sweater right over the top of a dress.
Dresses are difficult because they almost always call attention to themselves. A pullover mutes the dress making it more wearable. Here’s what to do: 1. Pull out that dress you can never seem to wear. 2. Find a light sweater—loose weave, crochet, sheer, or wrap—in a neutral or matching color—to wear over it. 3. You may need to add a belt. The result: A sophisticated, low-profile look. A hint of the dress shows but otherwise, it looks like you’re wearing a skirt with subtle matching elements above. It might be a tag or lingerie loop showing, a deodorant streak, or the wrong shoes. Do a twirl. If you see one, you have license to yell "FLAW!" My dear college roommate Susan and I would serve as QC for each other; I still do the check before I leave the house. Back then, we loved shopping at The Limited; haven't visited their store in years...not half bad.
Do you remember the magazine covers with celebrities in varying shades of denim? About 5 years ago I donated all my denim shirts and kept but one dark jean jacket. But at H&M last week, I found a great denim dress for $34.95. My friend that I was shopping with said her mom had worn a similar dress in the '70s. The fit is different today than 5 (or 40) years ago--not so boxy, close-cut sleeves. Denim feels good and flatters everyone; I say welcome back to my closet.
A friend of mine once said that your finest things should be the ones underneath and hidden away like your change purse, your lingerie... A sweet little cami like this (another Valentine's gift idea) might make you feel beautiful from the inside out. The Calypso St. Barth line conjures up worldwide adventure and exotic escape.
1. The package is like a gift on your doorstep when you get home.
2. Greener option: saves gas and driving—delivery is a bit like public transportation for goods. For 8 more reasons, check out "10 Reasons to Shop Online" under the tab Permanent Fixtures to the left. Any reasons I left out? I'm dying to hear your story of an item that jumped ship and took on a new job.
Here are two of my examples: 1. I have a cross-front top that always felt a little too low cut, didn't feel right even with a cami. I switched it to a base layer, threw on a cardigan, and now I wear it all the time. 2. It seemed that a new striped cashmere crewneck sweater would be perfect for work, but somehow it felt too masculine and informal. Switched its role to a playtime and loungewear item; now I turn to it daily. Did you know you can now shop the J.Crew factory store online through the J.Crew website? All sale and factory items still an additional 40% off with the code OURTREAT If you've been struggling for more than a couple months to wear a specific item, try changing its role. Pair a casual shirt with dress pants for work or a dressy shirt with jeans for play. Try wearing a failed shirt as a base layer instead of the main act. Demote a sweater that doesn't feel right at work to loungewear. It'll give the item new life and might even help you figure out how to pair it for its original purpose.
Are you allowed to splurge on the top since you only spent $14 on the bottoms?
Tip: if you like this idea and they're out of the sweater in your size, get the black Target pants and the sweater in gray or the vest in black. My husband, a "gear-head," mistook these boys' snowpants from Target above for Burton women's snowpants when I brought them home (compare with those below). Try them with a puffy white vest or white sweater. The boys' sizes L and XL (sold in store for $13.98 but online for $19.99) will fit women under 5'6" tall, 30 inch waist, and under about 140 lbs. Also comes in solid black.
