"A great lasting wardrobe is not about a certain look, but about dressing as yourself."
                                                                                    --Fashion journalist Lou Stoppard

I'm flattered when a friend says "This looks like you" when we're shopping because it implies that I have a signature style. Whether or not you realize what your signature style is, you probably know your signature colors.

It's easy to tell kids' favorite colors because they wear, like, only purple or (in the case of my son) only orange or green (ugh!).

I've only just come to realize that my signature colors are red, white, & gray. In fact, I'm having a hard time getting dressed this morning because all my red, white, & gray things are on the bed:

Picture
not pictured: red & white maxi dress, red, white, & gray scarf

I don't why I love these colors (my husband thinks I secretly wish I were a sailor in a foreign navy), but I remember when I first wore those colors together years ago, I felt 100% like me in them.

Now I often buy two of the same thing, so I have one for play & one for work.

Here are some of the items pictured above with links to the stores if you're interested in any of them:
Picture
Urban Outfitters BDG 3/4 Sleeve Striped Boatneck Tee $18.00 •2 for $24
These tops come in a bunch of cute designs, & you can mix & match
2 for $24. I got two of the same, of course, so I could wear one into the ground & keep one brighter.
Picture
Garnet Hill Aimee Twist Knit Top, $28
This Garnet Hill top is pretty similar to that
<<UO top, but you only get one for $28. I had to work pretty hard not to buy this one.
Picture
Land's End Girls' Stripe V-neck Cardigan, $34
I bought this cardigan because of its red & gray-striped sleeves.
I can't decide if I like the other colors in it, but it's fun, looks ok with jeans.
I got it at a discount this summer in Girls' XXL.
Picture
J. Crew Factory Gingham Popover, $24.99 (minus 30% with code SHIRT30)
I bought this shirt to go under black sweaters as in the outfit below.
The benefit of having signature colors is that after a while most everything in your wardrobe goes together fairly easily.

Of course, new colors are always coming into vogue, people change, and I like lots of other colors & combinations.

I'm not always dressed in red, white, and gray, but most days I'm likely wearing one of those colors. They just feel right for me.

What are your signature colors? Do you buy multiples when you find things in those colors?

Lace-topped tees from H&M

H&M may be affordable, but they take care with the details. I'm in tears (again) for these lovely lace-topped tees. The lace is a vine design placed on mesh.

I found this cap-sleeved lace-topped tee online & then visited the store in person to see if I could find it & check sizing. In store, they carried it in black, white, & army green, but I love the purple, so I ordered online The top runs small. Top with a cardigan for fall/winter.

While I was in store, I found this beautiful long-sleeved blue one and had to have it! It has a touch of lace on the cuffs too!

H&M has a couple other designs with mesh & lace in store.

Have you ordered from H&M online yet? I ordered the top on Friday and it arrived yesterday (Tuesday)--that's pretty quick! Shipping is $5.95.

Taking back the man purse

9/28/2013

The man purse (sometimes referred to as a murse) became well known during the Seinfeld era ("It's European!").
Click here for images of men wearing them. Men felt they too should have a convenient way to hold their wallet, keys, and essentials without tweaking their backs from sitting unevenly for decades on an overstuffed wallet. Luckily messenger bags, laptop bags, backpacks, and fanny packs came along to relieve men of this discomfort. Still, men eye a woman's purse with envy.

I found this little bag in the men's department at H&M this past week. I wish I'd taken a photo of the manikin sporting several layers of denim and down along with the neat cross-body leather strap of this bag. Instead, I grabbed a bag and walked as nonchalantly as possible toward the checkout.

I felt obliged to offer the bag to my husband when I got home. He tried it on, but, alas, the strap is not long enough for his 6'2" frame. His friend from Costa Rica tried it on as well and said it was completely natural for men in Argentina to wear small bags like this one. I didn't offer him the bag, of course, because he might accept it!

I've transitioned all my essentials into the bag (I had to pare down a bit, which is hard) and am wearing the bag confidently though I'm keeping watch for covetous men.

Let's swap...

"Guilt-free shopping"--that's how Rachel & Nia referred to the Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry, & Accessories Swap they hosted at Rachel's house last weekend. And what a swap it was! Our hosts were so thoughtful of their guests & so well organized, it was a huge success.

Our beautiful hosts: Rachel & Nia

Picture
Nia
Rachel & Nia are in the midst of a "shopping freeze." They are supporting each other in not buying any new clothes until January!

Two items I brought to swap:

Picture
I was glad that the invitation to the swap came early in the summer, so I had a couple months to sort through my clothes & accumulate things to swap. Rachel & Nia invited about 20 people to the event, & about 12 attended.
Picture
I originally purchased this top at a boutique, so I was flattered that it was chosen for the Swap Boutique.
I could never make this piece work, & I don't think anyone took it home. But that's ok--it confirmed for me how difficult a piece it is.
These Tevas went home with someone at the swap.
Picture

An elegant affair
Rachel & Nia had done so much work in advance to make the swap work easily. Tables were labeled with the different categories of "merchandise," & an empty closet upstairs served as a "Boutique" where we hung our best or most expensive things.
Picture

Everything was free pickings except the things in the Boutique--we put stickers with our names on our favorites and then worked it out later.

We enjoyed beer, wine, & delicious snacks!

Rachel put full-length mirrors around the house and welcomed us to use any room we wanted to try on clothes.

Something for eveyone

"This looks like you."
We helped each other find the right items to give new life.

As the women walked into the house, I was struck by how well dressed they were! There were also women of all sizes, so that everyone would be able to find something in her size amidst the clothes they brought.

I went home with two bags of new things without spending a dime:
a super nice real leather belt, a lovely necklace, two lovely ruffled blouses (Lei & Eddie Bauer), a pretty rose-colored tunic (Forever 21), a grey wrap sweater, a little halter top (Banana Republic), gray jeans (Forever 21), gray work pants (Loft), a printed skirt, & a pair of camel boots (Nine West) that I plan to have dyed dark brown. Truly—I made out!!

Picture
I had no trouble finding many things I liked at the swap--here's everything I got
Picture
Here are my four favorites: a Gordini tee, a Liz Claiborne wide leather belt, a Lei ruffled blouse, and a lovely necklace

Aftermath
Picture
Rachel donated eight bags of clothes to charity after the swap was over.

We left having met some new people, found some great new things to wear, having given our clothes & jewelry a new life, & having had a great time!

Rachel is thinking of making the swap an annual affair. I know she got some lovely items in the swap, & I hope it helps keep her shopping cravings at bay until the freeze ends.

Have you ever been to a swap? I've been invited to two in the past year, & I hear from friends that it's the latest trend. I think you could do it on a smaller scale too--just get together with a couple friends & swap. With a small group, you might enjoy telling the stories of the clothes that you've brought to swap.

Who's afraid?

"I love that my friends have different views, taste in music, religion, spirituality, they support different charities, it all broadens my horizons and opens my eyes, mind, and heart to how unique we are but yet proves we are all connected."
                                                                               --Debbie McPherson Campbell

Should you participate online? Should you like posts and/or comment on them? Should you buy things online?

Over the past couple years, I've decided that the pros outweigh the risks. I "like" judiciously, comment whenever inspired, & tweet & retweet all over the place (and, of course, I shop almost entirely online).

Here are some of the pros and cons...

PROS
You make friends from all over the world & from all walks of life. Your world view expands.

You become better at expressing yourself--often in very few words.

You keep up with technology. You learn to interact via different platforms, know what's going on, keep up with changes. Interacting online is also light relief, a break from all the serious work we do on our computers.

Your online presence may lead to new contacts, new opportunities, even to a new career.

Some people live alone, & some are surrounded by family & friends. But your online friends become a second community of friends.

Your online persona can be anyone you want to be. It's a space & time just for you.

Everyone knows shy people aren't really quiet;
they just need the right environment to open up.
Shy people speak out online.

It's easy to be generous online, & in the process you help people grow, thrive, & achieve their dreams.

Shopping online has many benefits:
10 Reasons to Shop Online here.

CONS
Everything you do online leaves a permanent record.

Every time you enter your credit card information online, someone might steal it.

You may find yourself online when you should be doing other things like exercising.

Sometimes people say rude things online.

What I Don't Like
-Sites that make you watch a video to get to the content & sites that automatically play a video aloud

-Viruses & people trying to entice you to click on links to viruses (why would anyone do this??)

-Posts about what you're eating with a photo of the food--I usually find those a little gross (but I like recipes & the amazing breakfasts Maren Anita posts on Fashion Meets Art each day!)

A worst case scenario:
Stolen identity

One day I got a notice via email that I'd been tagged in a photo. I have my Facebook account set up so that I approve tags before they appear on my wall.
So I trotted over the FB to take a look.

There I saw Before & After photos of someone tagged with my name who definitely was not me! A whole pile of other people were tagged too, and my guess is they weren't that person either :-).

The Before photo was of an overweight woman; the After was of an emaciated girl (after supposedly using a weight-loss product that had helped her lose 100 lbs).

The comments were funny: one guy said that the woman looked better in the Before photo & I agree!

Another comment said that the women in the photos showed no resemblance to each other--also true!

Anyway, I unfriended "Charlotte Russe" (can you blame me for having accepted her friend request in the first place?) & reported the post as spam. I didn't allow the tag on my wall, and that's why I can't access it now to show you the photos.

Nothing bad has happened since then.

Picture
My Twitter account

You wake up one morning & see you've tweeted 5,000 tweets (tiny in Twitter world). What in the world was all that chatter about?

I know there are more reasons why people don't interact online. For many people they're just too busy in other aspects of their life. For me, online interaction has enriched my life.

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, I'll follow you back & likely interact with you. I wish you great success as you pursue your dreams!

What are your reasons for getting involved or steering clear online?

Give the shirt off your back this T-shirt Sunday

Have you donated some clothing lately? I volunteered last week at Homeless Connect 13, a one-day event providing services from haircuts to medical, dental, and legal to Denver homeless. I worked at the discharge station helping to check people out; at the time I left just past midday, about 300 people had been served. Just next to my station were several expansive tables with free clothing. What I loved seeing was that there was no
go-between--the clothes went directly to people who need them. Many of the participants were seeking coats, jackets, and backpacks.

I'll be looking for more ways to get clothing directly to those who need it.

Those wishing to give clothing to flood victims in Colorado can donate to

The Bridge House in Boulder, a day shelter and social service provider for the homeless, which is seeking donations of shoes, socks, and outerwear. It's located at 1120½ Pine Street, Boulder.

Signature Offset, a printing company, is also collecting food and clothing at its Broomfield location at 224 Commerce Street for distribution to flood victims.

Here I am with other volunteers at the discharge station. I'm the one sitting at the table with the big smile & shoulder-length hair. You can see the clothing tables behind us.

Dressing down fancy

9/18/2013

In my dream world, every item in my closet would be getting worn. As someone once said, your clothes need to pay rent for closet space, earn their keep, get out into circulation. So I was excited last week to see the fashion tip from Piperlime that we wear a nightlife dress out to lunch. Since then, I've been thinking about ways to dress down my fanciest dresses, the ones that almost never see the outside of the closet door. Not sure about wearing them out to lunch, but I'm thinking you can wear most anything to happy hour :-)

Here's the look Piperlime suggested we wear to lunch...
PicturePiperlime Diamond Horizon Dress by M Missoni, $795

This dress is a little over my budget :-)

"You can never be overdressed or overeducated"                                                                   --Oscar Wilde

Now that fall's on the way, our options open up a bit. One way to dress down the fancy is to throw on a casual jacket. What do you think of topping your fancy dress with a military-inspired jacket?

Picture
Urban Outfitters Ecote Canvas Military Jacket, $89
Picture
Urban Outfitters Ecote Canvas Military Jacket, $89

You could also add a casual vest or wear funky boots with your fancy dress. Reminds me a bit of the bride I saw over the summer in a wedding dress & high tops :-)

Sadly, I can't afford one of those cute little jackets right now, so I'm settling for trying the jacket I bought off season over the summer:
Picture
Backcountry,com prAna Sylvie Jacket, $57.17

In today's uber casual world, you can often be accused of being "dressed up."
Do you like to dress up? Do you wish we weren't all so casual all the time?

Picture
You may remember this Urban Outfitters Staring at the Stars Dress I bought a year ago. It's featured in this post with a beautiful leather PoseManikin necklace.

I last wore it to a Roaring 20s themed fundraiser.

It doesn't get out much :-)

So here's the outfit I plan to wear to see Glenn Berggoetz's film "To Die is Hard," being shown free Tuesday night (Sept. 24) at The Forest Room 5 in Denver. This showing will benefit the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. Details here.

I realize the dress is not so dressy, and the jacket's not so casual. But I'm excited to take the jacket out for the night, and I'm thrilled to put my dress back into circulation! (even though I'll probably hear "why are you so dressed up?" Lol.)

Do you have a fancy dress you'd love to get into circulation? Any other ideas how to dress down fancy?

Black & white: my work "uniform"

It's no news that black & white makes it easy to get dressed in the morning. Even when the pieces aren't so new, black & white together almost always looks crisp & conveys the impression "I got this."

Side-by-side: Jeggings

Husband: "Is there really something called a 'jegging'?"

When I get home at the end of the day, all I want to do is put on my pj's & climb into bed. Unfortunately, people expect me to function for about another 5 hours. Enter my new best friend: the Jegging.

The jegging is one of those trends I've been waiting for for years, a dressier version of sweats, the more structured version of leggings with belt loops & pockets in back & faux pockets in front. Ideal for the grocery store, sports events, or lying around the house.

I'm terribly cheap--especially when it comes to loungewear--so I was glad to find Calvin Klein ponte knit jeggings for $16.99 at
Costco that seem somewhat similar to the Athleta ones I was eyeing.... They're also the exact same ones on the Calvin Klein site for $69.50.
