Happy Easter!
Author, actor, director Glenn Berggoetz is wearing his Ralphie t-shirt from the film "A Chirstmas Story" today. He tells us that he tends to dress pretty casually. Check out Glenn’s new book “Guernica Still Burning,” an intermix of poetry, fiction, and philosophy, at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/guernica-still-burning-glenn-berggoetz/1108052617 Once you get home from Easter brunch, what t-shirt will you put on? Send me your favorite t-shirt to post on an upcoming T-shirt Sunday. The trend says “Be bold.” But for those of us of quieter temperaments, how ‘bout just a bold accessory like a red belt perhaps?
What do remember wearing as a child, teenager, or young adult? Do these memories influence the fashions you are drawn to today? A query on this topic came in to OMF from Jessy Randall... "Do you think that memory could play a role in our fashion choices? I love the TV show Top Chef, and the chefs and judges on that are always talking about how memory plays into our feelings about food. If we taste something that reminds us of something from childhood, perhaps we particularly like or dislike it now. I've been thinking about this because I realized this week that I was wearing a sundress that may harken back to a childhood sundress of mine, and that might be why I like it. I had on a dress with a little bit of that sort of elastic top in the back, so the fabric is all crinkled up just under the shoulder straps, you know what I mean? And suddenly I remembered that when I was about six years old I had a sundress made of fabric covered in pink elephants, a dress my mom made me, and that was my favorite, favorite dress, my go-to dress at age six. If it was clean, I wore it (if it was warm enough). And that's sort of how this other dress is for me now! I'm not saying we should all seek out clothes like we wore when we were kids, but I wonder if there's some of that going on unconsciously when we choose new clothes. Jessy Randall (http://personalwebs.coloradocollege.edu/~jrandall/)" Response from OMF: Yes! I completely agree that we are forever influenced by our childhood memories when we choose our duds. When I was a girl, we lived for a time in a small town, and I was given a gift of a top with butterfly sleeves from the nicest store in town: Anthony's. I felt so elegant and fashionable in that top, I have forever been drawn to tops with that style of sleeve. In college I wore crisp white shirts and shorts for school and later jeans and plain white t-shirts for play--I still turn to these simple combinations when I need to feel tidy or cool. I'll carry your comment in my thoughts as I look at clothes, Jessy. Thank you so much for stirring up memories for us! I am slightly obsessed with this tunic. I already own a couple variations on it that I've been trying to convince myself will do. But this one looks perfect and multiseasonal. I love seeing it layered over a stripey tee, love its short sleeves and raw edges. On sale 35% off with free shipping and free returns until April 11.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a jacket to go with every outfit and work in every season? This jacket is long enough to go over a tunic, long cardigan, or dress. It's light-weight but warm. The double-breasted snaps make it dressy, but the fleece keeps it casual. The falcon color is lighter than it appears--it's taupe--good for fall but surprisingly good for spring too--taupe looks lovely with lavender, pink, rose, light green, light blue, floral, stripes... High quality fleece, won't ball.
Trouser jeans have gotten me through many a rough morning—dressy enough for work, and they go with everything.
What do you turn to when you have nothing to wear? Please send me your favorite t-shirts, and I'll post them on Sundays! Here's a wonderful one from Brooklyn Industries with thanks to a lovely OMF subscriber. I believe if you spend $50 or more with Brooklyn Industries today, you'll get 20% off if you enter the code NOJOKE at checkout.
