Animal prints are classic & seem to me to convey a little old Hollywood grace & glamour. Here are the animals in my closet... Last year, I found this leopard-print dress at Land's End for under $30. Very easy to wear. My youngest son's very favorite item of mine is this leopard-print cardigan because it's so soft. I got at H&M for $5; I noticed over the weekend they still carry them in store for $14.95. Over the summer, I came across this animal-print skirt from Banana Republic that I managed to snag for the "kill price" of $9.50. My latest acquisition is this leopard-print sweatshirt from H&M. So what about you? Do you own many animal-print pieces? Did you buy them recently or in the past? You may also like...

I know you don't want to, but let's talk about belts. Many of us gave up belts when our bellies got big or pregnant & never took them up again. And who wants to spend money on some little piece of leather or fabric, an accessory? But if we can find the right outfit that won't make us feel like an elephant, belts can add some spice when used as a contrasting color. With pants & jeans... Anything goes with jeans... With skirts... With dresses... Belting dresses can add life to dresses old & new. I hear blue is the new neutral this spring. I think colorful belts in the spring are the equivalent of colorful tights in the fall. Do you want to give them a try? You may also like... Try as you might not to eat this holiday season, you'll be eating--oh yes, you will be eating all right. And there's nothing worse than feeling like you're popping out of your clothes when you do. So I recommend you wear a dress with lots of room for advancement. I own both of the dresses below & have worn them quite successfully for large meals. The trick is in the high, almost empire waist, & lots of fullness from the ribs down.
What do you wear when you know you'll be eating a lot? Enjoy those holiday meals! :-) "A great lasting wardrobe is not about a certain look, but about dressing as yourself." I'm flattered when a friend says "This looks like you" when we're shopping because it implies that I have a signature style. Whether or not you realize what your signature style is, you probably know your signature colors. It's easy to tell kids' favorite colors because they wear, like, only purple or (in the case of my son) only orange or green (ugh!). I've only just come to realize that my signature colors are red, white, & gray. In fact, I'm having a hard time getting dressed this morning because all my red, white, & gray things are on the bed: I don't why I love these colors (my husband thinks I secretly wish I were a sailor in a foreign navy), but I remember when I first wore those colors together years ago, I felt 100% like me in them. Now I often buy two of the same thing, so I have one for play & one for work. Here are some of the items pictured above with links to the stores if you're interested in any of them:
Of course, new colors are always coming into vogue, people change, and I like lots of other colors & combinations. I'm not always dressed in red, white, and gray, but most days I'm likely wearing one of those colors. They just feel right for me. What are your signature colors? Do you buy multiples when you find things in those colors? Swimsuits cost too much, don't you agree? It's one of those times I'll hazard any alternatives to find more affordable choices. Seeing spots... Retro is in. If you love dots & stripes, check out dELiA's, Alloy's, and Old Navy's swimsuits--cute & affordable. My summer swimsuit... My suit for this summer comes from two unlikely sources: my top was on sale last summer at Long Tall Sally, a British clothing company for tall women (I'm not tall), and my skort is from Lands' End girls' department. Girls' swimwear is less than half the cost of women's. Lands' End Girls' Plus sizes will fit women up to about a size 10. Ask me for help with the sizing if you're thinking of ordering a girl's suit for you. What do you think of this $30 outfit? Girl's XL dress from Lands' End. After 30% off and free shipping, it weighed in right around $20. Target tights, $5. Old J. Jill belt, about $5. For women 5'5" or shorter and under 140 lbs.: Now, for women, we get a little more flexibility. If you're under 5'5", you may want to consider purchasing girls' clothes instead of women's for some items since they are often almost identical and are typically half the price! Girls also often get all the best styles. They are sized for girls of all sizes up to 18 years old (size 18) and are also offered in Plus sizes. The largest size is really big! Below is my Unofficial Size Chart, developed from my many girls' department purchases. Also some tips...
Tips:
·Most plus sizes you’ll have to order online. ·You may have to remove the belt loops on sweaters or tops so that you can self-tie, or they may end up too high on your waist. ·Several places to look: Land’s End, L.L.Bean, GAP, Old Navy, H&M, R.E.I., Boden, Garnet Hill, Nordstrom, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Target, Alloy, dELiA's--really, anywhere girls' clothes are sold! ·Patagonia and Columbia jackets and pullovers also come in XXL kids’ sizes for a fraction of the cost of an adult jacket. ·An added bonus: Girls’ bottoms have an internal belt—takes the bulk out of your profile if you’re wearing a untucked tight shirt over the top. Check out the Mind the GAP tab "For Smaller Women" to your right for more girls' clothes that will fit women. |
