As the temperature drops, I think back to the many winter trips I took to Chicago to visit my best friend Michelle in grad school. I learned to circle a scarf round and tie it behind my head to protect my face from the freezing wind. We visited the big Eddie Bauer store on Michigan Avenue, and Michelle picked out the heaviest, puffiest coat they carried, and I bought heavy boots. We hung out in smoky coffee shops, ate bread and cheese, and drank espresso. The downtown holiday store window displays are amazing in Chicago. It's bitter cold but oh so bright.
