"I was sixteen when I found the jacket of my dreams. Slim and leather with hidden pockets on the inside. I wore it whenever I went out, both for warmth and to feel like a rock star. Until that fateful night, I thought we would never be parted. It was the end of the school year and students were thrilled to attend the annual Bonfire. I think the title of the event is pretty self-explanatory.
There was a designated area where students could leave their belongings if they wished. My best friend and I did just that and then joined the circumstances of students to watch the tower of wood set ablaze. After conversing with friends and watching the embers grow, we returned to the row of tables to claim our jackets. But—alas!—mine was gone! Taken. Never to be seen again. I no longer trust “supervised” locations for personal belongings."
Response from OMF:
I love your story, Alhana! It's beautifully written and so sad. I'm sure it strikes a cord with many people who have lost coats in coat checks. Your coat was lovely and conveyed so much more than just warmth--what a terrible loss.
