I believe it's "gay-la" as in gaiety, and "Have a gay time!" rather than "goll-a" as in "How does she have the gall to wear such a thing?!" But youtube says I'm wrong.
Anyway, I was happy to get to wear my gala dress at last this past week for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 100-year anniversary gala! I had to wear a scarf over it since the hall was so cold, but the slightly retro-style dress felt appropriate for a 1920s celebration. Very fun to see such wonderful students--especially those about to graduate--honored and celebrated!
